The Great Adventure(1953)

Arne Sucksdorff’s acclaimed feature-length nature film follows two young brothers in the Swedish countryside as they experience both the beauty and cruelty of the forest. They witness a fox raiding a chicken coop and secretly raise an orphaned otter before setting it free. Narrated by an adult recalling childhood, the film reflects on the bond between humans and animals and the tension between nature and civilization. Sucksdorff achieved his remarkable close-ups using a mix of tame and wild animals. The film won the International Prize at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival.
